CLLS Learners: Getting Started

Library literacy services are for English-speaking adults who want to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Remember, these services are FREE. If you are interested in becoming an adult learner, know someone who would like to be a learner, or would just like more information, take these 3 easy steps:

Step 1 - CONTACT US.

Help me find the program closest to me.

Once you connect with a library literacy program, you will be invited to come in for a conversation with a literacy staff member at the library literacy office nearest you. You will get an overview of the program and can see what the program has to offer. You will find out what you can expect and what’s expected of you. If for any reason this program does not meet your needs, be sure to ask for a referral to another organization that can.

Soon after your meeting with literacy staff, you will be called and matched with a trained volunteer tutor. The tutor will call you and together you can schedule a time and a day that is convenient for both of you. Typically tutors and learners meet once or twice a week for about an hour in a library setting.

  • You set the pace. There is no pressure, just a supportive environment for learning at your own speed.
  • We will supply you with books and materials but your are also welcome to bring books and materials from home or work to the tutoring session.
  • You and the volunteer tutor are a team. You can expect mutual respect and a positive experience.
  • If for any reason you do not feel comfortable with your tutor, just call your library literacy office and they will work with you to find another tutor.
